With the arrival of Philemon Wright, the city of Gatineau was born in 1800, bearing its first name, Wright's Town. The name would become in 1875, during its municipal incorporation, the City of Hull. The name Gatineau is the one that the city has borne since the municipal merger of 2002, which comes from the old name of the city of Gatineau, which for the majority of the population represents the old city, and not Hull.
